How the Scope 3 spend calculator works

Most small and mid-sized companies do not have kilograms and kilometres for their supply chain, but they do have their accounts. The spend-based method, allowed by the GHG Protocol Scope 3 Standard, multiplies what you spent with each type of supplier by an emission factor per dollar. Export last year’s spend by supplier or account, pick a spend category for each line (for example accounting services, laptops, flights, couriers or packaging), and the workbook converts your currency to 2022 US dollars, applies the US EPA supply-chain factor and sorts the result into the right Scope 3 category.

The factors come from the US EPA Supply Chain Greenhouse Gas Emission Factors v1.3, a public dataset covering more than 1,000 industries. We picked the 53 categories that cover most of a typical service, retail or light-industry business’s spending. Spend-based results are estimates; the workbook tells you which categories are largest so you know where to collect better data next year. For the background, read Scope 3 emissions explained.

Target tracking for SBTi and customer requests

Enter your target (for example a 42% cut in Scope 1 and 2 by 2030, in line with a 1.5°C pathway) and the year tracker draws a straight-line pathway from your base year. Each year you add your totals and the workbook shows whether you are on track, with a chart you can paste into a report or a customer questionnaire. If you are not sure what to aim for, see net zero targets explained.

Who it is for

Small and mid-sized companies answering carbon questions from larger customers, consultants and sustainability leads who need a clean, documented starting file, and students learning corporate carbon accounting. It works in Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice. If you would rather have the inventory done for you, including the data collection and a written methodology, see GHG inventory services.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get?

One Excel file (.xlsx) with 10 sheets: Start here, Settings, Summary, Scope 1, Scope 2, Scope 3 spend, Scope 3 summary, Year tracker, GRI 305 and Factors. After you check out in the climaRevolt store, we email you an invoice; the file is emailed to you as soon as the payment arrives, usually the same day.

Which countries does it work for?

Any country. Electricity factors cover 36 countries plus a world average, spend can be entered in any currency, and you can replace any factor with a national or supplier-specific one on the Factors sheet.

Is a spend-based Scope 3 estimate acceptable?

Yes, for a first inventory. The GHG Protocol Scope 3 Standard allows spend-based data, and it is widely used for screening and for SBTi submissions by smaller companies. Over time, replace the largest categories with activity or supplier data.

Can I use it for clients?

The standard licence covers one business. Consultants who want to use it with several clients can email info@climarevolt.com for a multi-client licence.

Can I get a refund?

If the file does not open or does not work as described, email us within 14 days and we will fix it or refund you.
